Poland scrambles jets as Russia strikes western Ukraine
Russia pounded Ukraine with missile and drone attacks overnight on Saturday and into Sunday morning, focusing on the major western city of Lviv. Ukraine's neighbour Poland scrambled fighter jets in order to ensure the safety of Polish airspace, the Polish military confirmed. Allied Nato aircraft were also deployed. Lviv's regional head Maksym Kozytskyi said two people were killed in strikes in the region, and two more injured. Elsewhere, Russia again targeted Ukraine's power plants - and one was struck in an overnight attack on Zaporizhzhia, where the mayor said one person died and more than 73,000 people were without electricity.

'Slippery slope': How will Pakistan strike India as tensions soar?
Islamabad, Pakistan – On Wednesday evening, as Pakistan grappled with the aftermath of a wave of missile strikes from India that hit at least six cities, killing 31 people, the country's military spokesperson took to a microphone with a chilling warning. "When Pakistan strikes India, it will come at a time and place of its own choosing," Lieutenant General Ahmed Sharif Chaudhry said in a media briefing. "The whole world will come to know, and its reverberation will be heard everywhere." Two days later, India and Pakistan have moved even closer to the brink of war. On Thursday, May 8, Pakistan accused India of flooding its airspace with kamikaze drones that were brought down over major cities, including Lahore and Karachi.

Two people were killed when a hotel was "wiped out" by a missile in the central city of Kryvyi Rih, regional officials said on Tuesday. Three died in drone attacks on the southeastern city of Zaporizhzhia. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy on Tuesday said Kyiv would retaliate and asked allies to consider joint air defence operations and provide long-range weapons capabilities. Ukraine's air force said it downed five of 10 incoming Russian missiles and 60 of 81 drones in Tuesday's attacks.

Will oil prices rise after Red Sea shipping curbs amid Houthi attacks?
Hijackings, missile strikes and drone assaults on ships by Yemen's Houthi rebels have forced AP Moller-Maersk, a Danish shipping and logistics giant, and Hapag-Lloyd, a German shipping and container transportation company, to pause shipments through the Red Sea. Their decisions, announced on Friday, are a sign that major corporations are taking the security situation in the Red Sea increasingly seriously. But the consequences might also be felt by the world's oil markets and the cost of energy that consumers need to bear – though the extent of any disruption might depend on how major global players respond to the looming crisis, said experts. Maersk said in a statement that its decision stemmed from the company's concerns about the "highly escalated security situation in the southern Red Sea and Gulf of Aden" over the past few weeks. Recent missile and drone attacks on commercial vessels represent a "significant threat to the safety and security of seafarers," it said.

Pro-Iranian forces in Syria warn US of response to air strikes
Pro-Iranian forces in Syria have said they have a "long arm" to respond to further United States air strikes on their positions, after tit-for-tat missile and drone attacks in Syria over the last 24 hours. The online statement, released late on Friday and signed by the Iranian Advisory Committee in Syria, said US air strikes had left several of their fighters dead and wounded, without specifying the fighters' nationality. "We have the capability to respond if our centres and forces in Syria are targeted," the statement said. On Friday night, two Syrian opposition activist groups reported a new wave of US air attacks on eastern Syria, which hit positions of Iran-backed militias, after rockets were fired at bases in Syria housing US troops. Several US officials, however, denied that attacks were launched late on Friday.

France to help UAE secure airspace from increasing attacks
France will help with the United Arab Emirates' air defence system after a series of ballistic missile and drone attacks launched from Yemen by the Houthi rebels on the Gulf country, its defence minister said on Friday. Paris has close economic and political ties with Abu Dhabi and has a permanent military base in the Emirati capital. It sealed a deal in December to sell 80 Rafale fighter jets to the UAE, the largest ever overseas sale of the French warplane. "The United Arab Emirates was victim of serious attacks on its territory in January," Defence Minister Florence Parly tweeted. "In order to show our solidarity with this friendly country, France has decided to provide military support, in particular to protect their airspace against any intrusion."
